Bangladesh has been observing the World Rivers Day since 2010. Riverine People, our organization, dedicated to river, wetlands and water issues, upon the correspondence with Mark Angelo, pioneered it. The theme of the first World Rivers Day in Bangladesh was- ‘Rivers Are Calling, Can’t We Respond?’
Nowadays, hundreds of government and non-government institutes and organizations observe the day. Since 2014, an alliance of the organization active on riverine issues, The Rivers Day Observation Council, has been jointly organizing the ‘March For Rivers’ from capital Dhaka’s Bahadur Shah Park to Sadarghat of Old Dhaka every year. Due to the pandemic, the event had been organized virtually named as ‘Online March For Rivers’ in 2020.
